One of Canada's leading ethicists – Margaret Somerville -- has come under significant public denunciation for her stance on the marriage debate. The reaction to Somerville is curious. The substantive arguments that Somerville brings to the defense of marriage (opposite sex) are rarely addressed. The critiques are typically mean-spirited and personal: she's a social conservative – she's a closet homophobe – she’s still burdened with crusty old religious beliefs.
