WHAT'S FIDELITY GOT TO DO WITH IT? Maggie Gallagher

Well, there Eve goes again being interesting to distraction. I don't have much to add yet, except to point out that, in addition to friendship, there is another sort of relationship that is deep, intimate, life-altering and yet not exclusive: motherhood. Presumably fatherhood too, but I speak about what I know.

A mother is not unfaithful in loving multiple children (although in preferring another person's child to her own she would be, I think).

And motherhood is probably the most intense, sustained experience of erotic love most women know. Judging from the marriage counseling books.

Which highlights all the more the deep importance of Eve's question: What is it about marriage that requires fidelity? Any answers? Or any disagreement?
