KINSHIP: Marty McKeever replies to Michael J. Bruno
On one hand,
Bruno practically reinforces
my point, by tossing out biological kinship in favor of simple"emotional attachment." Of course, we all know many biological kin with severely strained emotional bonds,s o what exactly could he mean? That there is no kinship worth consideration beyond the legal?
Second, he brings up one counterexample, sperm donation for an infertile father (and there are several other equally valid examples he could have used). While this actually does create a biological weakness of the same sort I refer to in same-sex partners, it is rooted in a compassionate response to brokenness. Divorce, adoption, and infertility all share this condition, and as such do not threaten the legal status quo of biological preference. But because same-sex partners create such families not as a"cure" for brokenness, but by design, they can set the precedent that biology really doesn't matter, making blood no thicker than legal water.
