OPPOSITION TO CANADIAN SSM: From the Globe and Mail

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper proposed Tuesday that the government entrench the traditional definition of marriage, but refused to say whether he would support use of the notwithstanding clause to ban gay weddings.

Mr. Harper said he will offer amendments to same-sex marriage legislation to guarantee equivalent rights and benefits for gay couples.

The amendments also would recognize the traditional definition of marriage as involving a man and a woman and provide more protection for religious institutions that refuse to perform gay weddings.
